Our Priorities

Housing

Students' Housing Priorities​

  • Create a student housing strategy.

​

  • For the city, in partnership with students associations and unions, to run a tenant rights awareness campaign aimed specifically at post-secondary students. Information can be distributed digitally and on campus via SAs/SUs and International Education offices on respective campuses.

​

  • For the city to include student representatives in consultation and decision making on grant allocation through the Downtown Student Housing Incentive. This would include on what constitutes student targeted housing, as well as what projects are ultimately approved.

Transit

Students' Transit Priorities​

  • In the fall supplemental budget adjustment process, draw on Canada Public Transit Fund funding to purchase Automated Passenger Counter equipment for the LRT, unlocking greater efficiency and responsiveness for all safety measures, maintenance, and space improvements.

  • Designate two seats on the Transit Advisory Board to post-secondary students, appointed through the Edmonton Student Alliance.

​

  • That the City of Edmonton invest in strategies to ensure that whatever level of authority figures is present on transit, that they be partnered up with Social Workers with the appropriate training to help assist individuals in need of help and deescalate dangerous encounters.

Newcomer Support

Students' Newcomer Support Priority​​

  • Re-instituting of the City Wide Welcome Event, in partnership with post-secondary institutions and students’ unions and associations in the city, targeting integration supports for students who have moved to Edmonton to attend a post-secondary program.

Civic Engagement

Students' Civic Engagement Priority​​

  • Make students and youth a priority, in terms of target audience, co-creation, and opportunity, for the new LRT station activation plan involving interactive initiatives, installations, and business and community partnerships.

Employment

Students' Employment Priority​​

  • The City of Edmonton has issued forty types of grants and funding supports. Add a granting stream to empower local businesses and cultural and community organizations to create entry-level positions that engage students in their local communities.
